Advanced Spanish Class (Grades 2-5)

Let’s learn Spanish! This class is for students who are ready to be challenged in Spanish. Your student must have previously taken a class with Mrs.Griffin to register. Mrs. Griffin will offer students an experience in a small class size where they will be given the opportunity to practice vocabulary and phrasing in the Spanish language. Students will be given ample opportunity to practice with the teacher and friends. Students will continue to work in small groups and partnerships practicing words, phrases and expressions. Mrs.Griffin will expand the student's understanding of the spanish language. This class is designed for students who really want to learn to read and write in Spanish and take it to the next level.

Boot Camp (Grades K-3)

Mrs. Rice and Mrs.Malkin for Grades K - 3 in the Gym

Studies show that physical activity helps kids learn. We would like to bring Boot Camp to students in Kindergarten to 2nd grade at Rowayton School as a way to jump start their brains for learning while encouraging students to find enjoyment in exercise. Activities will include rope climbing, cargo net, monkey bars, pull ups/chin ups, stretching, and activities for balance and coordination. These structured activities will improve cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. Each session will incorporate elements of individual exercise as well as teamwork and cooperation. Examples of activities include: using scooters to navigate the gym to find hidden bean bags, partner squats using an exercise ball, and obstacle courses. Students will be grouped by age appropriate exercises.

Chess Club (Grades K-5)

Join Mrs. Malkin and Mrs. Rice for Rowayton Academy’s Chess Club! Students will learn the basics of chess with a new online program called ChessKid.com. The teachers will use a Common Core-aligned curriculum to teach a weekly lesson for beginners to advanced players. Students will have the opportunity to play against each other on physical chess boards and then advance to online puzzles, games and tournaments. Each student will receive a distinct user ID that will track their progress and allow them to complete optional activities at home. The students will be having so much fun learning to play chess they will not realize they are learning patience, strategy, and critical thinking. This class is open to beginners and experienced players.

Classroom Show Choir (Grades 3-5)

Sign up for this fun and fulfilling musical experience to become a part of Rowayton Academy's Show Choir. This season Show Choir has been invited to perform at the New Paradigm Theater’s (NPT) Holiday Show in December at the Stratford High School’s newly renovated theater space. This summer Ms. LaRusso was youth director for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory there and has been invited back. The NPT is a 501c3 non-profit professional theatre promoting social responsibility and fostering creative problem solvers, leaders and global citizens through theatre arts and education programs. This session, we have an exciting opportunity to produce and practice our own holiday number, in addition to songs/choreography provided to us by the artistic director of NPT during our morning sessions. There will be one dress rehearsal and then we get included into the holiday show alongside broadway professionals, regional and local actors, teens from surrounding areas and the artistic director of the theatre herself. We perform two numbers in both shows. This is an experience of a lifetime for students interested in arts and arts education!

Coding (Grades 2-4)

Ms. Kruse for Grades 2 - 4 in room 232

Students will explore Scratch and code.org. Beginners, novice and advanced coders are all welcome to this class! Scratch is designed to introduce children to the basic steps of coding. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century. Scratch was created at MIT University and has become the standard for introducing children to programming. It teaches kids computer skills as well as emphasizes creativity and problem solving. This class will follow the Harvard Scratch curriculum for kids. As the students progress through the program, they will create interactive games and stories, improve their critical thinking and use independent problem solving skills to grow as "Coders”. More information on the curriculum can be found HERE Advanced students can work on Code.org to create additional interactive games or stories by improving their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students can collaborate on projects for increased creativity while learning repeat-loops, conditionals, algorithms, functions and variables.

Create your Own Jewelry (Grades 2 -3)

****THIS CLASS IS FOR FOUR WEEKS. A class where the students can explore through their imagination and creativity! The jewelry class will be an excellent space for students to unleash their artistic flair and craft beautiful earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. More than just creating jewelry, students will gain essential skills such as using the tool’s to manipulate small parts for a better grip, twisting wires to make the jewelry, and enhancing their fine motor skills. These skills will empower students to create their unique pieces! With guidance from Ms. Rosa, students will gradually build on their skills and proficiency to make fun jewelry pieces! **PLEASE NOTE: If there is interest, we can extend the class for 6 more weeks.

Crochet Club (Grades 3-5)

*THIS CLASS IS FOUR WEEKS. Join our crochet class for grades 3-5 and discover the art of crafting! We’ll start with fun projects like pot holders, trivets, and scarves, perfect for sparking creativity and honing fine motor skills. No experience needed—just bring your imagination and a willingness to learn. Let’s create something beautiful together! **PLEASE NOTE: If there is interest, we can extend the class for 6 more weeks.

Guitar (Grades 3-5)

Mr.Kiernan for Grades 3 - 5 on the music stage

Three cords and a Dream . . . Who wants to be a rock star? Mr. Kiernan will provide guitar lessons to students who are beginners or have some playing experience. Students will have the opportunity to learn music styles including folk, blues, reggae and rock. They will also learn how to compose their own music and record it.

Hands on Science (Grades 1-3)

Who doesn’t like having fun? As we engage in various science experiments and activities, we’ll make a mess while testing solutions, ideas, and concepts that challenge our thinking and result in constructed products. Some of our favorite activities include; making slime (regular or edible), ice cream, testing bacteria, extracting DNA, and bath bombs. In addition, making bubble gum, square bubbles, chromatography prints, leak proof bags, elephant toothpaste, rubber eggs, balloons in a bottle, and turning milk into plastic are just a few samples of the fun that awaits! If you are repeating the course, rest assured we ALWAYS have NEW experiments in addition to some of your favorites!! Mrs.Shipman will be taking requests for the experiments you love.

Hands on Science with OM (Grades 3-5)

This class will combine science experiments with the Odyssey of the Mind (OM) strategies. Meet the merger of exciting science experiments and tackling crazy fun and unique challenges! Are you ready to get messy and create some really cool science things? Making slime (regular or edible), ice cream, geysers, fossils, DNA extraction, and bath bombs are only “some” of our fun activities. We may also race balloon rockets, experiment with mild acids, create solutions, and test bacteria around the school. If you are repeating the course, rest assured we ALWAYS have NEW experiments in addition to some of your favorites!! Mrs.Shipman will be taking requests for the experiments you love. Spontaneous problem solving will encompass verbal & hands-on problems utilizing Odyssey of the Mind (OM) resources. This approach fosters teamwork & collaboration while learning to solve problems within a specified time frame. Students will be placed in teams and each week, up to 5 challenges will be tackled & strategies will be shared. Intro to Math Olympiads (Grades 4-5)

“Mathematical Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Schools” or MOEMS (http://www.moems.org) is an international math competition program. This year, in its 45th year, the MOEMS is expected to have more than 5,000 teams with more than 120,000 participating students. Competition consists of 5 monthly contests given from November to March. Each contest has 5 problems to be solved by students individually.

The goals of the Math Olympiad program are to stimulate enthusiasm for mathematics while teaching strategies and problem solving for complex problems. Students will learn new ways to creatively look at math story problems. Math Olympiad is an excellent way to offer additional motivation and challenge students who have an interest in new and challenging math. Learning with their school peers and competing as a team against other national teams, motivates and engages the students.

This 4-week session will introduce students to the process of the competition and samples of the problems they will be expected to solve. After the 4-week session, students can choose to enroll in the competition session that runs from October to March. It is required that your student take the introductory class before participating on the competitive team.

The class will conclude with a field trip on April 25th to the MoMath https://momath.org/ museum in New York City. The agenda for the day includes: a round trip on the train into NYC, attending 2 classes at MoMath, exploring the museum, eating lunch and recess at Washington Square Park. It is always a great reward for the kids and they have a great time! There will be an additional cost for the field trip that will be dependent on the number of students who attend.

Mock Trial (Grades 3-5)

Do you love acting things out? Do you love logic, figuring out puzzles, and learning about the law? Then Mock Trial is the class for you! Mock trial is the acting out of a realistic case. The parts to be played are lawyers, witnesses, judges and more! The prosecution and the defense will work privately to prepare their cases, just as real lawyers would. Then, students will act it out in front of a selected jury. Families will be invited to attend! This case will deal with some issues of vandalism and breaking and entering, so please be aware if those topics make you nervous. $215

Pickleball (Grades 2-5)

Pickleball is fun, social and friendly! It is a sport that has elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong. Rowayton School now has new courts for the kids to use! The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a fast-paced competitive game. In this class, students will learn the basics of the sport. They will be able to identify the parts of the pickleball court and the rules. They will play fun games that teach them the basics and practice eye hand coordination. We have all of the equipment on hand. Mrs. Griffin played collegiate tennis and has crossed over to pickleball. Players who already know how to play will be matched with players at the same level of play. Players new to the game will be taught the basics of the game. Come ready to learn and play!

Reader's Theater (Grades 1-3)

What is Reader's Theater? It's a way to involve students in reading aloud. In Reader's theater, students “perform” by reading scripts created from grade-level books or stories. Reader’s Theater is a strategy that combines reading practice and performing. Its goal is to enhance students' reading skills and confidence by having them practice reading with a purpose. Reader’s Theater gives students a real reason to read aloud! Join Mrs. Pippa for Reader’s Theater Club and you will get the chance to be a star! She will work to improve your child’s reading and acting each week as we put on fun plays and performances based on our favorite stories, books, and poems!
