Class Description

What do fantasy football and March Madness have in common? Numbers, strategy, probability, and a whole lot of competition! In this engaging course, students will use real sports data to develop their math, data analysis, probability, and critical-thinking skills. The course begins with NFL fantasy football, where students will analyze player statistics, track performance, identify trends, compare players, calculate averages and percentages, and make evidence-based decisions about rosters, lineups, etc. As the NFL season unfolds, students will use real-time statistics to evaluate their choices and develop strategies for building a successful team. After the NFL season ends, the course will make the change from fantasy football to March Madness. Students will shift their focus to NCAA basketball, using team statistics, rankings, player performance, historical data, and matchup information to make predictions and build their tournament brackets. They will explore probability, percentages, averages, trends, and statistical comparisons while defending their bracket selections with evidence. From NFL playoffs to Final Four predictions, students will discover how math and data can be used to make smarter decisions in the world of sports. This course turns every game into a hands-on opportunity to practice math, probability, data analysis, strategic thinking, and evidence-based reasoning all while competing to see whose predictions and strategies come out on top!
